The Wetlands
The wet grasslands in Skåne North East is one of Sweden’s most fascinating wetland environments. Geological, biological and human forces have created this unique area of natural and cultural history that spans 35 kilometres of rivers and lakes.
From the earliest of times the water meadows along the river banks and the shores of the lakes have been used for grazing, as it is not possible to grow crops here. Locals had learned from experience that from one day to the next heavy rains up country could mean that these low-lying flood plains were inundated with water. The fact that these areas are still use for grazing and haymaking plays a vital role in maintaining the biological diversity of the region.
The sandy heath lands to the south-east also abound in plant life.
There are some 30 species of fish in the lakes and rivers of Kristianstads Vattenrike, and the successful reintroduction of the European catfish (also known as the wels catfish or the sheatfish) is a sure sign that the aquatic environment is well on its way to a better state of health. The local flora and fauna make the entire region a unique biosphere area, and one in which human beings work in harmony with nature in order to preserve biological diversity for posterity.
