Stargazing in Stockholm

Head to Observatory Hill in Stockholm, Sweden and visit The Observatory Museum. Run by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, this observatory was founded in the mid 1700’s. Exhibits in the museum tell the story of the building and of some of the activities that have taken place through the centuries. Immerse yourself in an astronomer’s environment, while looking at instruments used over the past 300 years. Research studies within astronomy, geography, and meteorology were conducted here

Pehr Wilhelm, the first astronomer to live and work at the observatory, kept detailed records of his research. Records of weather observations, which have regularly been taken from the observatory since 1756, are on display in the Weather Room. In the Old Meridian Room guests can view planet models, based on 18th century perceptions of the solar system. When visiting the Clock Room, guests will see a precision clock from Molyneux & Cope. The Vega Room has exhibits detailing the story of Adolf Erik Nordenskjöld and his explorations of the Northwest Passage.

The museum, open between October and March, invites the public to gaze at the evening sky from the cupola. Museum tours are given at designated times.

Conference arrangements, with guided tours in English, are available.
