Skåne appointed Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE)
Skåne is appointed to be a centre of environmental education in Scandinavia. The UN University approved the application. The vision is a commitment to make a difference in the world for a sustainable development.
The common vision is to make Skåne a leading example for the rest of Sweden, Scandinavia, the Baltic region and the world, on how to deliver education for sustainable
development at all levels. The RCE Skåne will contribute to the empowerment of people of all ages in the region to assume responsibility for creating a better tomorrow and a sustainable future. It is also envisioned that the RCE Skåne will become a catalyst in strengthening those who are currently striving for sustainable development in the region, and act as a platform for partnerships with other parts of the world. Having four universities and many enterprises within the region, from rather large to small, research and development are obviously very important in Skåne. Careful documentation of all RCE activities is of great importance. A national research network entitled “Education and Sustainable development” with members from Kristianstad, Lund and Malmö Universities all want “to join hands and learn from each other in this process”.
Malmö is undergoing a transition from being an industrial city to a city of knowledge. Older industries have been replaced by investments in new technology and training programmes of high calibre. Malmö University, which opened in 1998, is Sweden’s latest venture in the field of higher education, accommodating some 15.000 students.
