Island of Astronomy
The Planet Walk is now being installed at the Tycho Brahe Memorials, ready for opening at the 29 th of April 2008. The Planet Walk starts from a sculpture of the sun placed in front of the new museum. The planet stations will be placed to scale as regards size and distance from this sculpture.
The open-air exhibition for 2008 will be about play and entertainment in Tycho Brahe’s time. The exhibition will open on the 5 th of May and run until the end of September. “There is an enormous international interest for Tycho Brahe”, says Göran Nyström, Project Manager for the new museum. ”The history of our modern view of the universe that was cultivated by the efforts of 16 century scientists still fascinates people today.
Up until the 16th century astronomy was more of a philosphy than a science. The man who brought about this change was Danish nobleman (at the time Skåne was a part of Denmark) Tycho Brahe. On his legendary island of Ven in the sound between Denmark and Sweden, he began a large-scale project to chart the heavens.
As well as the new museum the site also boasts the ancient monument of Tycho Brahe’s Stjärneborg observatory and the reconstructed renaissance garden that surrounded the mansion.
The island Ven is known for beeing a cycling paradise. During the day you will be able to get around and see most of this lovely gem just opposite Landskrona from where you could take the boat. Locals proudly produces a lot of tasty specialities like cheese, pasta and even whiskey! Season begins in May and ends in September.
