Harvest time
Suddenly you realize that the season for swimsuits is over. Now we are looking forward to fresh walks in the woods soon turning golden, red, ochre yellow. Afterwards we arrange a cosy gathering in front of the fireplace. Perhaps you brought a basket of Chanterelles back to the kitchen. The fields and woods are filled with gems and the taste of autumn is perhaps even more generous than the summer delights. Everywhere in the villages and cities the old traditional harvest markets tempt us with their special autumn smell and colourful products.
In the old days this was the time for preparing the food to be stored during the long wintertime. The herrings were salted, the meat hanged up in the chimney to be smoked, the fruit conserved in different manor.
It is also a time for hunting. Skåne is an excellent choice for those who are interested in hunting. Try stalking for wild goat, or hunting pheasant and wild duck. Drive hunting for wild boar is another popular alternative.
It is also the season for traditional foods. Since Skåne once belonged to Denmark the dishes is much alike but served in different periods. Eating goose is the big event in November here, but in Denmark you will find it on the Christmas table instead.
After Crawfish parties in August the Eel parties are on. Eel hunting is an old tradition and even in the old days the eel was eaten in the small shed near the sea. Nowhere else you have so many ways of cooking and preparing eel as here in Skåne. In October the result of the successful hunt for elks, boars, deers and pheasants will bring culinary experiences to the visitors to inns and manors dated from ancient times.
And be sure to make a reservation for the goose treat in November. Every master chef is already preparing for one of the most popular month for eating out.
