The kitchen has been renovated, twentyone new hotel rooms are planned, and a bathhouse for a dip in the chilly sea will soon be on tap. The picturesque village of Fiskebäckskil is located in Sweden’s western archipelago. Peppered with white clapboard houses, this small community has ridden the wave of fortune over the years. Once a thriving community because of the bountiful herring catches, the town declined when the herring disappeared. The next revival rose on the merits of the shipping industry. The development of rail lines and steam- powered vessels brought this era to an end, and the people of Fiskebäckskil sought other means of support.
