Garden Gems In Skåne

Skåne, the southern county in Sweden, is hiding a treasure of garden gems to visit! Nowhere else in the country you will find so many exciting private and institutional gardens to visit during a few days or a week. I went to see some of them for a site inspection just before Eastern. Of course still some weeks too early to get the full beauty of them, but you can feel the power of nature waking up after winter rest. Emma Karp, the famous giant apple art designer in Kivik, took me to her father’s garden. He is a legend among garden lovers and still going strong in spite of his age. There – just in the background you will see the tree that was planted from one of the survivors from Titanic, nearly one hundred years ago. It’s so fascinating to listen to Emma’s stories of this old garden. I drove back to Brantevik to meet with Karin and her Fairy Tale Garden. Never seen anything like it! She is an artist with a lot of energy and fantasy and this garden will embrace and enchant you. But the story is kind of sad. She started to create her garden to ease the emptiness when her husband died, 17 years ago. There are a lot of heart shaped stones in this garden..

I left south east corner of Sweden after visiting the Mediterranean garden in Simrishamn. He is an expert and you will really get to know how to succeed with palm trees. With a few more stops on the route to Landskrona I went for the the allotment gardens nearby the Citadel, castle in Landskrona. These adorable small cottages are opened to the public one weekend a year and for special guided tours. In Landskrona there is the Citadel from the mid 16th century. Concerts, cultural and open-air activities are held here. The Citadel allotment-gardens are also nearby, one of the country’s oldest allotment-garden areas open to the public.

The season to visit the gardens starts in the midst of May with e.g the tulip festival in Simrishamn, continues with rose festivals, harvest time and more. You could also drive around and visit inspirational gardens of all sizes during the first weekend in June “Private Garden Tour”.

Read more about the Dream Garden Tour that also could be combined with other destinations, e.g Copenhagen, Stockholm and Gothenburg Göteborg).
