Football Championships for Doctors in Malmö
For one week during July 2012, Malmö will host the seventh football world championships for doctors – the World Medical Football Championships. Approximately 15 teams from all over the world will gather to battle it out for gold, including Sweden’s national medical football team. The Swedish doctor and football player Christian Höglund claimed second place in the top scoring league with his six goals. But despite this, the Swedish team came a rather inconspicuous nine out of twelve teams. But the Swedish team did consistently win the Fair Play Cup!
Together with the world championships, the Global Congress on Health & Medicine in Sport – a congress covering a broad range of sport medicine content – will be organised for the eighteenth time. The doctors also have their own federation – the World Medical Football Federation. The World Medical Football Championships are played more often than larger football world championships, and the latest winners were the Catalan national team who won against Great Britain scoring 5-4 on penalties.
The arrangement is expected to attract many visitors to Malmö, and not least of all set the city on the event map. It is expected to bring around 2,000 overnights.
