Follow the wheel tracks of Carl Linnaeus 3
Linnaeus described the town Kristianstad with accuracy. Here he found hundreds of artisans and industries for various products as well as plantations with wine and tobacco crops. Still there are numerous craft shops and farm shops dotted around the area.
Kristianstad church is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful Renaissance church in northern Europe.
The land between Åhus and Kristianstad was sweet-scented by blooming carnations not so frequent elsewhere in the country. In Åhus he stayed the night at the vicars house. Åhus nowadays has a reputation eel parties, tobacco and distilled spirit brand Absolut Vodka and beautiful beaches.
On the way to Kristianstad Linnaeus passed Hammershus, a manor farm built in 1642. The Danish king Christian when building Kristianstad used Hammershus to live in.
Linnaeus noted on the way south that sticks of birch to cultivate Hops created hedges and Hops grew well. Local seeds should be used instead of imported from France. With all that apple orchards Linnaeus thought the farmers should learn to produce äppelmust (apple must) and cider,“almost as tasty as wine.” Hops cultivation was centred in the Vånga district and the only preserved oast house in Sweden was erected in 1926 and is located in Näsum. This area also became a centre for fruit growing early. Seeing the fruit trees blossom in May is quite an experience.
Sinclairsholm, where Linnaeus spent his first night in Skåne dates from 1679; it was restored in 1950s as an 18th century building. Linnaeus described the garden as pleasant with various floras. In the beech forest you could find wild horses, hard to domesticate. The ravage of wolfs had reduce the number of horses though.
