Discover Swedish Local Heritage
There are about 1 900 Swedish local heritage societies in the countryside, in villages, suburbs and towns. The aim of these societies is to preserve the popular culture of earlier ages as manifested in traditional festivities, the architectural heritage, crafts, costume and oral tradition.
Most of the societies also manage local heritage centres, open to the public. Local heritage centres can be old farmsteads, school buildings and even factories or wind mills to show our industrial heritage.
The local heritage centres serve both as meeting places and local museums. Here the traditional festivities take place, such as Midsummer’s Eve, Walpurgis Night, Harvest Home and Christmas Fairs. Local Heritage societies often serve traditional local or regional food at major events. Sometimes there are also special arrangements, such as Steam Engine Day, folk music jamborees and local pageants, drawing visitors by the thousand.

The local heritage societies have acquired a deep knowledge of their home communities. They research local history, publish their findings in various ways and organise guided tours to tell about famous places. They are also interested in genealogical research and movements of population. Many societies have extensive archives containing old documents and photographs.
