Timeless travel in Österlen
Visit one of my favourite Swedish resort. We too a drive cross Skane to the south east part one day. Suddenly you are out of the wood and the view is spectacular. Far down you will have the blue Baltic Sea. White and soft sandy beaches as far as the eye can reach.You feel peace of mind in this surroundings. This is the place for hazy lazy days in a world of your own. This is a piece of Skåne and Sweden still unexploid and a hidden gem for high level tours with unique experie
nces. Barely two hours from Copenhagen – and total relaxation. This is a national park dominated by deciduous forest of an exotic nature and romantic apple orchards everywhere. A sense of limitless space will spread. Down hill we check-in at the beautiful beach hotel of distinguished heritage, Vitemölla. Which also is a quiet picturesque fishing village.
The dunes and the sea just outside your hotel window create a special light – a light that has always attracted artists and writers here.
It was 1911 that two of Vitemölla’s local food dealers formed a company with the goal of building a beach hotel on a beautiful property. They were successful with their project and 1913, a majestic building was finished and the hotel was ready to be inaugurated.
The opening ceremony and the following party were much talked about in the entire south of Sweden. At this time, the guests were picked up by a horse carriage at a nearby train station in Vitaby and were taken to the hotel. (The vintage train is still running as an attraction for tourists. Hop on and have a bite and drink and enjoy the scenic landscape outside your window)
The beach hotel became very famous and in the Swedish Encyclopaedia at the time it was mentioned as one of the east coasts most exclusive hotels. From the hotel I recommend a walkt to he harbour in Kivik. Stroll alongside the shore for a couple of kilometres and take a break in the sunset with a smoked fish dinner at Buhres before you go back to Vitemölla hotell.
Österlen is an inspiring and restful environment with spectacular nature, rare flowers and wild horses. Hiking, biking, riding, swimming and golfing are what you do during your stay. The culinary experiences are central and you will find award winning gourmet menus at the small inns with hundreds of years of history.
And so much from the past still remains, from the wooded grounds of castles to half-timbered quadrangular farms and long white Skåne cottages, to give Österlen a genuine atmosphere. It is also easy accessible from Malmö and Copenhagen within 50 minutes.
You can also bike from Malmö – with an overnight stop in e.g Ystad. Local maps will help you find the best cycling routes.
