Christmas Markets city vs. villages
Wherever you go these days you will probably find a Christmas Market. It is not easy to choose: big event or the small village. During passed weekend we visited both: Fredriksdal Open Air Museum in Helsingborg with about 20.000 visitors and a local event in Arild, small village by the sea. The locals open their small studios and private homes and welcome you to see and buy pieces of art, jewelleries and textiles. The small catholic chapel reviles its hidden wall paintings of a gruesome legend. The artist, Gisela Trapp spend six years to illustrate a saga written five hundred years ago. She spent her summers in Arild and the estate of Fredriksdal was her home. Arild Christmas market is a genuine experience where the traditional Lucia Choir completed the poetic afternoon.
Members of the local heritage societies round Skåne offer unique traditional and handmade gifts to taste and to buy. From the end of November until December 20 you will find them travelling around to sell their products on Christmas Markets. Small villages often offer some kind of works shop where you may join and learn more about old traditions still in practise.
