It is a pleasure to drive along small country roads in Småland and explore the gems hiding behind the next bend. Who cares of an imaginary border between counties? Some three hundred and thirty years ago this was a real border between Sweden and Denmark. Perhaps that’s why Skåne is so different from the rest of Sweden. That’s what people say anyway.Since this year will be the celebration of Linnés 300-years birthday it seems natural to begin here where he was born: a beautiful place called Råshult near Älmhult.

Älmhult is most famous for two reasons: Firstly, the world´s first IKEA store is located in the town. Its founder, Ingvar Kamprad, is from the region. Secondly, the world famous Swedish scientist Carl von Linne, was born in 1707 in nearby Råshult. He is probably best known as a botanist and for his system of classifying organisms, which is still used today.

Älmhult is near to the larger towns of Växjö, with its own airport and Kristianstad. From Malmö you will drive 150 kilometres to get here.

Its juxtaposition to the railway line means that it is within easy reach of Stockholm , Malmö, Copenhagen and the airports of each of these large cities. Travellers can comfortably reach Alvesta where connections are available to Gothenburg.
