Itinerary Roundtrip Stockholm – Dalarna

A weekend in Old townDay 1.  Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city, and is only 40 minutes from Stockholm, and 17 minutes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Visit to the splendid Gothic Cathedral and Viking burials in Old Uppsala. Check in to hotel in central Uppsala next to Sweden’s most historic botanical garden.

Day 2. Drive north towards Dalarna (Dalecarlia). This region is also known as the heart of Sweden, and is home to the original wooden Dalahäst (Dala Horse).  Here, history dates back to the days of King Gustav Vasa who escaped from the Danes on skis. Today, his same route is raced every year, with more than 40,000 cross-country skiers from all over the world.
Our first stop is at Sundborn where the charming home of Carl Larsson and his wife Karin is preserved as a museum. Take a guided tour of the museum; visit the local church and the art gallery.

Visit to the World Heritage Falun to see the different attractions, and be impressed by the Falun Mine as you walk along the over-ground Mine Walk path . Visit the old town. Some small timber houses blackened by the smoke from the smelting houses can still be seen today. However, almost all of them have been painted with Faluröd – the red paint from Falun – and the smoke stains have disappeared.

Tallberg houseAfter a walk through the old neighbourhood, continue to Tällberg and your hotel on the hilltop, with a beautiful view over lake Siljan.

Day 3 Drive to Rättvik in the morning, up to the wooden tower Vidablick, with its magnificent view across the whole Siljan region.

Watch the church boats coming in carrying visitors to the church. Church boat rowing is a tradition in Dalarna.
Experience the Dalahäst handicraftsmanship. The Dalahäst’s colourful design and fancy oil painting, is a simplified form of kurbits painting. This colourful painting is distinguished by its exaggerated richness of detail, and was painted on walls, cupboards, chests and Mora clocks in the area around Siljan.

Lunch at Mora.  This town is also where the cross-country skiing race Vasaloppet finishes.  Visit the church,the Vasalopp area and Zorn Museum.
Visit Leksand and the house and garden of Hildasholm. Here you can admire up close the Swedish and foreign art and handicrafts, which have been collected and brought to Hildasholm during the first part of the 20th century.

 

Christina155Day 4. Return journey to Stockholm.
Stop and visit to Sala Silvermine. The Silver Mine in Sala has for many years been an impressive site for people from all over the world.

The age of the mine is unknown, but there are reasons to believe it dates back to the Middle Ages. Continuous mining started at the beginning of the 16th century, and lasted until the beginning of the 20th century.
Stop in the town of Västerås b

 

y lake Mälaren, where the old cathedral dating back to the 13th century can be found.
Visit the ancient burial mound, 14 metres high and 60 metres across, making it the largest in Sweden.
Arrive to Stockholm. Stop at Haga Park where the crown princess lives, before arriving to your centrally located first-class hotel.

DrottningholmDay 5. Meet with your local guide and bus at the hotel, and drive to Drottningholm Park and Palace for a visit.

Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It is the most well-preserved royal castle built in the 1600s in Sweden, and at the same time represents all European architecture for the period. The combination of the exotic Chinese Pavilion plea

sure palace, the palace theatre and the magnificent palace gardens makes a visit to Drottningholm a unique experience.
Return by bus to the city for lunch.
Use the historical tram to visit Skansen (not guided tour).

Day 6 Meet with your guide and transfer to the pier and boats to the archipelago. Sit back and enjoy this lovely trip to the archipelago town Vaxholm.  The journey is an experience in itself.  Stroll around the island, and admire its small picturesque wooden houses and the view towards the fortress.  On our return to the city, enjoy a delicious lunch on board the charming vintage steamboat.

in the city, visit (walk from the pier) the National Historical Museum (1km) with its amazing Viking exhibitions.
Day 7 Departure (no guide). First stop at the Kaknästornet telecom tower, where you take the lift up to admire the impressive view over the city and archipelago. Continue on to another impressive historical building – Skokloster Castle north from Sigtuna for a visit inside and walk through the park.
Return to Sigtuna for lunch, and stroll through the village before arriving back at Stockholm Arlanda airport.
