Examples of tours with historical theme

Here are some tours with historical themes mainly for groups of minimum 10 pax. The packages are suitable shore excursions for cruise passangers. For individuals sharing a rental car(fly & drive) we will be glad to make adjustments and provide iteneraries.

1.The Carmelite Monastery is one of Northern Europe’s most well preserved monasteries and therefore one of the major places of interest in Elsinore. The guided tour in the Carmelite Monastery will be of the cloisters, the music room and the refectory. In Sct. Maria Church you will see the well-preserved murals and the newly renovated organ, which Buxtehude, the German composer, used when he was organist here during the 1660’s.

2.Roskilde Cathedral, Kronborg Castle Two of Denmark’s World Heritage sites are situated in North Zealand. You will visit the magnificent Roskilde Cathedral built in the 12th century. This was the first Gothic church in Scandinavia built in red brick. Roskilde has been the Royal burial town ever since the Viking age and since 1535 all Danish kings and most queens are buried here. The attractions are the Royal chapels and beautifully decorated tombs and the Golden Dress of Queen Margret I. Next stop is Kronborg Castle – a beautiful example of a Renaissance castle and at the same time a military fortress. Kronborg is also known as the backdrop of the Shakespeare play “Hamlet”. See the Banqueting Hall, the Royal chambers and the casemates.

3.Citadellet in Landskrona, built as a fortress in 1559, is regarded as one of the best preserved Nordic Water fortresses. It served as a fortress for more than 250 years in the wars between Denmark and Sweden. After the wars had ended, in the beginning of the 18th century, Citadellet was used as a prison for prisoners serving life sentence and for dissolute women until 1940. On the fortification banks around Citadellet allotment gardens were founded already in the 19th century. You will visit the only allotment garden museum in Sweden, the Rothoffska Kolonin from 1903.

Sofiero Castle4.Start with a visit to Sofiero Castle and Garden, the former Swedish Royal summer residence outside Helsingborg. The famous rhododendron ravine attracts many visitors every summer. Take the ferry across the Öresund sound to Elsinore and visit Kronborg Castle, “the Hamlet Castle”. After lunch in a typical Danish Inn you will visit the home of the famous Danish writer and Africa traveller Karen Blixen (1885-1962 – pseudonym Isak Dinesen). Her book about her dramatic life at the farm in Kenya was later shown in the motion picture“Out of Africa”.

5. Visit the falcons for hunting. Since the Viking Age and until 1810, birds of prey have been used as hunting companions of Viking chieftains and kings. Visit Falkonergården where falconers have taken up the tradition of training hawks and falcons for hunting. Watch the falcons, hawks and eagles swoop from great heights at a speed of 300 km/h just above you head! Esrum Abbey, founded in 1151, became the most influential Cistercian monastery in the North of Europe. After the Reformation only the late-medieval west wing remains. Your guide will tell you about the life of the Cistercian monks. A medieval lunch in the Broder Rus’ Kaelder, the restaurant in the monastery cellar, will complete your day.

6.Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) observed a new star in the constellation of Cassiopeia in 1572 and it made him famous all over Europe. He built his scientific centre on the Island of Ven. On your tour to Ven you will visit the Tycho Brahe Heritage with the remains of his observatory and the reconstructed renaissance garden. The Tycho Brahe museum shows his life and scientific significance as well as reconstructions of the instruments he developed.

7. During World War II Denmark was occupied by the Germans while Sweden was neutral. This tour takes you on a journey through the dramatic years of Swedish and Danish life during the war; the defence, the resistance, the refugee rescues. Visit Sweden’s only museum in a World War II underground bunker situated north of Helsingborg. The guided tour will show you how Swedish troops prepared for defence should the Germans have attacked from across the narrow sound. Continue to the Museum of Danish resistance outside Copenhagen, where your guided tour takes you through the years of the occupied Denmark. Resistant movement, sabotage, and the rescue of Jews who fled to Sweden.

8. At Fredriksdal Museum the history lives; on Lillaryds gård, a farm from the mid 17thcentury the “farmers wife” tells the history of the old farm. You will try churning butter, winding and making rope and other crafts that were common in days gone by. This is followed by a break to allow you to taste the “home-made” butter on bread rolls and other refreshments. You may decide whether you like to walk to the farm or ride on a horse drawn cart.

9. By hay-wain/horsedrawn cart you take the ride to Lillaryd farm. The people at the farm, dressed in traditional costumes, are busy cutting and stacking hay. You are welcome to try raking and stacking, to experience life labouring on a farm in the 19th century. After coffee break in the fields you continue to the Museum of Graphic Art where printing techniques from the 1460’s are on display. You receive a personalised printed napkin as souvenir.

10. Enjoy a delightful historical guided walk through the city centre of Helsingborg. Your guide will tell you its dramatic Danish and Swedish history. The famous sights, the Kärnan Tower, the Town Hall and St. Maria church, will be shown. There are also a couple of houses from the 17th century to pass by. The tour will end at the modern Henry Dunker Culture Centre, where you can have coffee overlooking the Marina and the Danish coastline.

11.Enjoy a guided walking tour through Elsinore’s many interesting, old streets, which are lined with numerous listed houses. In the old town you will see Sundtoldskarrén and the beautiful patrician houses. Pass by the town’s oldest house, admire some of the beautiful back gardens and walk along the charming, cobble-stoned Anna Queens Straede, which was the location for the shooting of a film about the famous Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Finally you will visit the former “red light district” for sailors and their female companions.

12. Take a historic trip around the Öresund. Start with a visit at the former Royal Castle and summer residence, Sofiero Castle. After a guided tour in the beautiful gardens, there will be time for shopping in the city centre of Helsingborg. Continue to Lund where you will visit the Cathedral before you cross the sound via the Öresund Bridge. A beautiful drive north along the coastline to Elsinore where you will get a guided tour at Kronborg Castle. Ferry transfer to Helsingborg.
